Scope of the project:
Building and install system support with reduced manual workload for handling of slabs from loading on loadcarriers in Luleå and Oxelösund to delivery into the furnaces at the entry of the hotstrip mill. Including transports by railway, internal trucks and all handling of slabs in the slabyards
Why this project ?
- Minimize personell workload
- Demand for higher quality when slabs are stored in the slabyard,
complexity to pile slabs with many variants on a small area
- Increased wolume requires less ”overhead” and faster handling

The system consists of stationary readers (Najad), handheld readers (Nereid) and active RFID information tags (Carme)

Needed functions
- Common function to identify loadcarriers for transport between Luleå-Borlänge-Oxelösund for 430 railroad wagons
Define storage positions for slabs on loadcarriers
New stockhandling system for slabyards in Borlänge
- New support for loading in Luleå and Oxelösund with storage location on wagons
New communication between involved systems
Taken Decisions
- Use RFID Active tags, programmed with minimum of data
- Use 868 MHz frequency
- Start mounting tags in advance
- Communication with TCP/IP
- Define rules for positions on loadcarriers
- Avoid energy consuming
Location of tag’s on wagons

Where to mount tags?
- The position to mount tag’s are critical for the performance and
safety of the tag.
- Our tags are exposed for high temperature, ice, water, vibrations
- To put steel covers around tags reduces performance but may
protect tags from being damaged, needs to be tested out for each
installation

Economy
- Project budget is 1 M Euro including a new Stockhandling system frpm AIS
- 1 year total project time from first contact to ”take over”
- Payback time is calculated to 2,4 year including 24 % internal interest
